Do We Suffer From Hearing Loss?
It isn’t the immigration status of the parent in this story that bothers me. Nor is it the fact that Medicaid will not pay for a second implant for her child. No, what bothers me is the writer’s use of the word “suffer” as in “suffer hearing loss.” Is having hearing loss so bad that it merits the use of the word “suffer?” Every time hearing loss is referred to in such terms, it reinforces the public’s image of deaf people as people to feel sorry for. Excuse me while I go to get my tin cup and start begging because I “suffer” from being deaf.
